January 3, 2006 CAREER DAY TO SHOW SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY TO TEENAGE WOMEN SALINA – Kansas treasurer Lynn Jenkins will deliver the keynote address to nearly 200 high school girls from around central Kansas attending the TWIST Career Day at Kansas State University at Salina on Thursday, Jan. 5. TWIST, which stands for Teen Women in Science and Technology, sponsors a career day each year to help expose high school women to opportunities in fields related to science, mathematics and technology. The keynote speaker this year is Lynn Jenkins, treasurer for the state of Kansas; the program also will feature 18 presenters from Salina and nearby communities. “Subjects like science, math and technology traditionally attract men,” said Dixie Schierlman, K-State at Salina associate dean of student life and TWIST coordinator. “TWIST exists to bring these fields to high school girls so that they can see that, not only are these subjects interesting and cool, but they are open to women, too.” TWIST Career Day is sponsored and planned by representatives of K-State at Salina, Girl Scouts of Central Kansas, area school districts, Tony’s Pizza Service and Bucher, Willis & Ratliff. |
