K-STATE AT SALINA STUDENT LEADS PLANS FOR NATIONAL COMPETITION Tuesday, February 15, 2005 SALINA – Kansas State University at Salina student Heath Larson has a lot on his plate. Larson, a senior in professional pilot from Marquette, is the National Intercollegiate Flying Association president for the NIFA’s 2005 SAFECON – Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference – which will take place at K-State at Salina. As president, Larson must assemble a team of students to assist him in planning every detail of the weeklong event to be held at K-State at Salina, April 26-30, and will have thirty collegiate aviation teams from across the country competing. Planning for the 2005 SAFECON began a year ago when it was announced that K-State at Salina would be the host school. Larson and the two vice presidents, Nancy Milleret, senior in professional pilot from Linwood, and Evelyn Ross, senior in professional pilot from Winfield, spent nine days with K-State’s flight team at the 2004 national competition in Tennessee to help them better understand the scope of their duties. Since then, Larson and his team have had to work out the details involved in planning an event to be attended by more than 400 students – everything from planning social events to purchasing trophies, securing space for the competition and securing private donations to pay for it all. “I’m excited about the opportunities the competition will bring to K-State at Salina,” said Larson. “I’m looking forward to seeing a year’s worth of work come to fruition.” In addition to his role with SAFECON and his classes, Larson is a flight instructor in the K-State aviation department, a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and a member of Women in Aviation International.
