Thursday, May 25, 2006 STUDENTS AWARDED MECHANIC RATINGS FROM FAA SALINA - Kansas State University at Salina administrators have announced recent student aviation mechanic achievements. All certifications and ratings are given by the Federal Aviation Administration upon successful completion of the required written and practical examinations. Before students are able to take the exams, they must already have completed a minimum of 1,900 contact hours of instruction, covering the material dictated by the FAA. Once this extensive training is documented and approved, students are able to take knowledge exams that deal with general aviation knowledge, as well as specific knowledge of both airframe (the exterior structure of the plane) and powerplant (the engine). Upon successful completion of the knowledge exams, students also must pass an oral exam, as well as a practical exam to demonstrate hands-on mechanic skills. Students receiving a mechanic certificate have passed the general knowledge exams. The additional airframe and powerplant ratings are earned by students through additional testing, demonstrating the required skills through successful oral and practical exams. Jared Burleigh, May 2005 graduate in aviation maintenance, Goddard, mechanic certificate with airframe and powerplant ratings; Michael Blankenship, senior in aviation maintenance, Manhattan, mechanic certificate with airframe rating; Britton Scott, junior in aviation maintenance, Oberlin, mechanic certificate with airframe and powerplant rating; Max Unruh, senior in aviation maintenance, Peabody, mechanic certificate with airframe and powerplant ratings; Jeffrey Scheibmeir, senior in aviation maintenance, Piqua, mechanic certificate with airframe ratings.
