May 27, 2004

SALINA – Kathy Brockway, assistant professor at Kansas State University at Salina, was named the 2004 recipient of the Marchbanks Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence at the spring commencement ceremony, May 15. Brockway teaches economics and accounting and has been with K-State for 10 years, the past three on the Salina campus.

“Kathy is a magnificent teacher and strong asset to the educational system at K-State Salina and the university as a whole,” said Dennis Kuhlman, dean of the College of Technology and Aviation. “The Marchbanks Award is the highest indication of teaching excellence awarded by our college, and Kathy is most deserving of this honor.”

The Marchbanks Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence was established in 1983 by to recognize a faculty member on the Salina campus for excellence in education with a focus on the development of students’ talents and abilities. Candidates are nominated by their peers and must submit materials that justify that nomination.

Kuhlman added that Brockway’s enthusiasm is contagious across the college.

“Kathy is admired by her students and colleagues alike,” Kuhlman said, “and is well-known across campus as the professor who gives ‘academic celebrations’ instead of tests.”

In addition to teaching, Brockway currently serves the college and university as a faculty senator. She is coordinator of the technology management advisory council, as well as an adviser to the Students in Free Enterprise student chapter. Most recently, she was named a Sam Walton Fellow through the SIFE program to help further develop the organization’s role on the Salina campus and in the community.
