K-STATE AT SALINA'S DENNIS KUHLMAN NAMED KANSAS ENGINEER OF THE YEAR

SALINA – Dennis Kuhlman, dean of Kansas State University at Salina, was named engineer of the year by the Kansas Society of Professional Engineers. He was presented with the award yesterday at the society’s annual conference in Overland Park.

Kuhlman was recognized for his leadership during the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer project in early 2005, during which famed aviator Steve Fossett completed the first non-stop solo flight around the world and set the absolute speed record for such a flight. Mission Control was based on the campus, and more than 100 students were involved as volunteers. A dozen students were in leadership positions that included working in Mission Control and providing ground maintenance on the plane. The GlobalFlyer project also was recognized with the Engineering Achievement Award for 2005 at the conference.

Kuhlman has been dean since 1997, after having served for many years as an extension agricultural engineer and faculty member on K-State’s Manhattan campus. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from K-State and his doctorate from Oklahoma State University, all in agricultural engineering. He is a licensed professional engineer and has more than 140 publications to his credit, including 19 peer-reviewed articles. He has won more than $430,000 in grants and holds one patent.

Kuhlman and his wife Carol live in Salina and have three grown children. He is the son of Erwin and Vera Kuhlman, Lakin.
