MULTICULTURAL EDUCATOR TO PRESENT AT K-STATE AT SALINA

September 22, 2004

SALINA – Gary Howard will deliver a keynote address at Kansas State University at Salina at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 28, in the College Center Conference Room. “A Passion for Equality: Teaching and Leading for Social Justice,” will explore the challenges of learning to be culturally competent. This event is free and open to the public.

“We’re really excited to have Mr. Howard come to our campus. His presentations are dynamic, and he is one of the best speakers in the nation about diversity and education,” said Shana Warkentine Meyer, assistant director of college advancement for student life.

“A Passion for Equality” highlights six key ways educators, community leaders and individuals can support both students and colleagues on the path to educational equity and help close the achievement gap. Meyer added, “While Gary speaks to and for educators, he also calls on students to become active participants in their own education.”

In addition to Howard’s presentation, a traveling exhibit about the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision will open with a reception and presentation on Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. The exhibit will be on display through Oct. 22 in the K-State at Salina Technology Center.

Both Howard’s presentation and the traveling exhibit are presented in conjunction with K-State’s Community Cultural Harmony Week.

Howard is a diversity trainer and consultant from Seattle, Wash., with 35 years of experience in diversity leadership and training. Howard spent 25 years as the founder and president of the REACH Center for Multicultural Education. His speeches use imagery and experiences taken from his annual white water diversity workshops on the Colorado River.
