ENROLLMENT NUMBERS RELEASED FOR K-STATE AT SALINA

September 23, 2004

SALINA – The Kansas Board of Regents released enrollment numbers for state schools today. K-State at Salina campus, which houses the College of Technology and Aviation, reported fall enrollment as 914 students. This enrollment is also reported with Kansas State University as a whole, which reported an overall enrollment of 23,151.

Not included in the numbers submitted to the regents are courses offered by K-State at Salina for industry training and continuing education. Combined, these courses accounted for 132 additional full-time equivalent students last year.

“The ‘20th day’ enrollment numbers are just a snapshot of that one day,” said Dennis Kuhlman, college dean. “That might be a good representation of enrollment at other institutions, but when you have so many programs that begin and end at different times throughout the calendar year, it doesn’t really reflect all the great activity at K-State at Salina.”

K-State at Salina currently offers three training programs for industry: certified inspector training, asphalt technology transfer program and an industrial retraining program with Tony’s Pizza Service. Participants are enrolled in specialized courses with the college, but since the offerings are designed to fit with the students’ professional schedules, they do not always correlate with the traditional academic semesters.

Kuhlman said that the framework of traditional semesters is becoming less and less of an accurate measurement of instruction and activity at K-State at Salina. As industry training courses continue to grow, he said that the college is becoming more year-round than ever before.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer these types of programs throughout the year,” he said. “A big part of our mission at K-State at Salina has always been to offer meaningful educational services to the community and state, and the success and growth of these training programs tells me that we must be doing something right.”
