September 25, 2003

SALINA -Kansas State University's College of Technology and Aviation, on the Salina campus, got noticed at the recent American Society for Engineering Education Midwest section conference at the University of Missouri in Rolla, Sept. 10-12.

With nearly a dozen faculty members and administrators in attendance, the college was recognized with a traveling trophy for the most "person-miles" traveled of any school in attendance. In addition to those traveling to the conference, several more were co-authors on papers presented.

“ For a smaller campus, the large number of participants from our campus made quite an impression,” said David Delker, engineering technology department head and conference attendee.

Adding to the recognition, research presented by Scott Shepard, associate professor of electronic and computer engineering technology, earned the Outstanding Paper designation. The paper, co-written by May 2003 graduate Stuart Bachamp, was titled “Optical Fiber Versus Free-Space Losses at Infrared.”

The following papers also were presented by K-State at Salina faculty:

Masud Hassan, professor of mechanical engineering technology, and Raju Dandu, associate professor of mechanical engineering technology, “A Low-Tech Approach to Physical Visualization of Concepts.”

John Heublein, professor of mathematics, “Putting Class Notes Online with Scientific Notebook.”

Beverlee Kissick, Salina director of libraries, and Saeed Khan, assistant professor of electronic and computer engineering technology, “Expectations, Leadership, Dialogue and a Long-Term Commitment to Diversity Promotion.”

Pedro Leite, assistant professor of computer systems technology, “Online Hybrid Courses Using University-Developed Software: Tailoring the Tool to Enhance Student Learning Across Disciplines.” Co-authors were professor of aviation Ken Barnard, assistant professor of chemistry Jung Oh, assistant professor of English Judy Collins and coordinator of instructional technology Gail Simmonds.

Julia Morse, associate professor of mechanical engineering technology, "Is this the AutoCAD or the Pro/E Class? Reshaping Students' False Expectations of CAD-based Course Objectives.”
