ACI Concrete Field Tester Certification (CF)
Prerequisite:
Pass Basic Math Test

Course Objectives:
The Kansas Department of Transportation requires this course for persons testing concrete in the field.

Learning Objectives:
• Sample freshly mixed concrete
• Determine the slump of concrete
• Determine the unit weight, yield and air content of concrete.
• Use a Pressure Meter to determine the air content of fresh concrete.
• Make and cure concrete test specimens.
• Determine the temperature of freshly mixed Portland Cement Concrete.

Class meets Wednesday through Friday at 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with one hour for lunch. Students are welcome to eat a buffet lunch at the cafeteria located in the College Center on campus.

This class is an American Concrete Institute (ACI) course which requires a written exam as well as a performance exam. The written and performance exams are given on Friday.

Testing Requirements:
A score of 60% on each portion of the written exam plus a 70% overall score is required to pass the ACI exam. Failure on any part of the written exam requires a full retest. Failure on any subtest of the performance exam requires retest on all 7 performance exams.

Re-takes:
Given on testing day. Anyone who needs to re-take the written and/or performance exams will be mailed a re-take form once the K-State at Salina CIT office has received the results from ACI. Re-takes must be taken within one year of the original test date. Written re-take fee: $110.00 Performance Re-take fee: $95.00

Test-Only Option:
Attendance at any training class for certification is not mandatory. The training classes at K-State at Salina are provided to review the standard test procedures necessary to pass both portions (written and performance) of the American Concrete Institute Exam. If an individual determines that the test-only option is preferable, it is recommended that the individual have at least 5 years experience and should know the test procedures well enough to perform each test without coaching. Neither the Professional Engineer for the day nor the instructor for the class is allowed to instruct an individual regarding test methods. By electing to take the “test-only option” the individual is expressing their knowledge and ability to perform requirements as determined by the American Concrete Institute. Test-only fee includes the workbook. The workbook will be mailed to the test-only student at the address on the registration form.

ACI Concrete Strength Tester Certification (CST)
Prerequisite:
Pass Basic Math Test

Course Objectives:
The Kansas Department of Transportation requires this course for persons who perform compression and flexural strength testing on concrete in order to meet design specifications.

Learning Objectives:
• Cap a cylindrical concrete specimen.
• Practice use of unbonded caps to determine compressive strength.
• Test flexural strength of concrete.
• Test the compressive strength of cylindrical concrete specimens.

Aggregate Laboratory Technician Certification (AGL)
Prerequisite:
Pass Basic Math Test and Aggregate Field Tester class.

Course Objectives:
This course is required by the Kansas Department of Transportation for persons testing aggregate for asphalt and concrete
mix design to decide on quality and acceptability.

Learning Objectives:
• Determine unit weight and voids in aggregate
• Test for specific gravity and absorption of fine and coarse aggregate
• Use sand equivalency test to determine plastic fines in graded aggregates
• Test uncompacted void content of fine aggregates
• Examine the percentage of fractured particles in coarse aggregate

2. Register and attend a review class, if one is offered, pass the written and performance exams. See below for dates.
3. Register for the entire class, pass the written and performance exams. See the individual class pages in this brochure for dates.

• Note: Contractors and Consultants can sponsor local written and performance testing in any ACI certification provided they supply an ACI certified P.E. and supplemental examiners. Contact Joe Hug, ACI Kansas Chapter Chairman at 620-473-2222 for more information.

Construction Management System Comprehensive (CMSC)
Prerequisites:
Successful completion of Basic Inspection

Course Objectives:
This course introduces the inspector to the Construction Management System (CMS). The course focuses on entry of data into CMS. The student will learn how to take the information gathered in the field for both material tests and contract administration and enter it into CMS. They will learn to generate Pay Estimates, create Change Orders and finalize a contract in CMS. The
trouble shooting portion of the course will change from year to year based on issues found during the construction season.

Drilled Shaft Inspection Class (DSI)
Prerequisite:
Pass Basic Math test and Basic Inspection class.

Course Objectives:
This class is designed to provide KDOT inspectors with the basic tools to inspect drilled shafts utilizing Kansas specifications.  To give participants the background behind design, construction and repair of drilled shafts in Kansas. This course meets the qualification standards for inspectors of Drilled Shafts required by FHWA.

Learning Objectives:
• How and why drilled shafts are designed
• Geologic issues with all phases of drilled shafts
• The role the inspector will play in the construction of the drilled shafts.
• Equipment utilized
• Construction Methods of the installation of drilled shafts
• Specifications for the installation of drilled shafts
• How to handle and who to contact when things do not go as planned.

Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) Plant Management & Inspection Class (HMA)
Prerequisite:
None

Course Objectives:
The course focuses on “how the plant should be run”, not “how to run the plant”—and provides a “punch list” of operational Best Management Practices along with a field Trouble Shooting Guide that ties common mix deficiencies back to possible production issues. This course is designed for those responsible for mix production, inspection and testing. Emphasis is on operational Best Management Practices (BMP) to assure top quality mix production. It is recommended that individuals have at
least one year of experience.

Learning Objectives:
• BMP’s for stockpiling, material feed, cold feed calibration, cold feed bin operation, drying efficiency, dust collection and dust return, asphalt ration blending, mix storage, mix loadout
• Troubleshooting production and quality control problems when they occur—a field “Trouble Shooting Guide” will be provided

IMSA Certification (MSA)
Course Objectives:
The International Municipal Signal Association Course is a two day course that will provide knowledgeable traffic signal inspection required to ensure that proper/specified construction practices are followed during signal installation.

Course Objectives:
The Kansas Department of Transportation requires this course for all persons inspecting various Kansas Department of Transportation projects.

Learning Objectives:
• Understand the many parts of structure construction and their specifications.
• Learn the specifications that apply to structures.
• Discuss the materials incorporated into structures.
• Determine the documentation for various structures.

Testing Requirements:
This course requires an exam. Students must pass with a minimum of 70%.

Asphalt Inspection (AI)
Course Objectives:
The Kansas Department of Transportation requires this course for all persons inspecting structures, bituminous pavement and concrete pavement on Kansas Department of Transportation projects.

Learning Objectives:
• Examine the various methods of construction and how to inspect each.
• Understand the construction of bituminous pavements.
• Learn the types of bituminous mixtures and the types of plant tests required.
• Discuss the types of equipment used to produce, place and compact bituminous surfaces.
• Learn what the inspector should look for and proper documentation.

Testing Requirements:
Asphalt Inspection requires an exam. Students must pass with a minimum of 70%.

Concrete Paving Inspection (CPI)
Course Objectives:
The Kansas Department of Transportation requires this course for all persons inspecting structures, bituminous pavement and concrete pavement on Kansas Department of Transportation projects.

Learning Objectives:
• Understand the materials, equipment, placement and inspection of concrete pavement.
• Examine Quality Control/Quality Assurance concepts, aggregate base fundamentals, concrete plant fundamentals and concrete paving fundamentals.
• Learn inspection and documentation requirements.

Concrete Inspection requires an exam. Students must pass with a minimum of 70%.

Inspection Renewal Exam
Course Objectives:
The Kansas Department of Transportation has established an Inspection Renewal Exam for individuals who must renew Basic Inspection, Structures, Asphalt Paving Inspection and Concrete Paving Inspection certifications. The KDOT form 240/241 is no longer used to renew certifications. You must take the Inspection Renewal Exams to renew certifications.
There are four renewal exams:
• Basic Inspection: covers Contract Administration, CMS, Traffic Control and Grading and Bases
• Structures
• Asphalt Paving
• Concrete Paving
Passing the Basic Inspection examination is necessary to hold certification in Structures, Asphalt Paving or Concrete Paving.

Testing Requirements:
Students must pass each exam with a minimum of 70%. Each student is allowed one exam and one re-take exam. If the student fails the re-take exam, that student must attend the corresponding inspection class when it is offered.

You Must Bring:
• Construction Manual with a current Part V
• 2007 KDOT English Specification book
• Pencils
• Calculator

Cost:
$25 per person for any or all four exams

Contact your District Office or K-State at Salina to schedule re-takes.

1. Register for the re-certification exam, pass the written exam and provide a screen print from CMS of the Inspector Witness Record, DTMT295 upon registering indicating that the student has been witnessed by KDOT within the past two years.

Course Objectives:
This course will explain the correct way to collect and submit samples of asphalt materials, pavement marking materials such as cold plastics, thermoplastics, epoxy pavement marking and traffic paints. Course also will include bridge paints, glass beads, center mounts and reflective sheeting.

Pile Driving Inspection Class (PDI)
Prerequisite:

This class is designed to provide KDOT Inspectors with the basic understanding of driven pile installation using KDOT specifications and practices. The class will introduce participants to the various aspects of pile driving, pile driving equipment and the use of the bearing formula and the Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA).  Give participants a background in the use, design and installation of driven piles used in KDOT bridges.

QC/QA Asphalt Specifications (AS)
Prerequisites:

Course Objectives:
Quality Control/Quality Assurance Asphalt Specifications is a 2-day course. This class can satisfy part of the requirements of the Superpave Field certification for the engineers, technicians and other personnel who will be involved in the construction of Superpave hot-mix asphalt (HMA) pavements using Quality Control and Quality Assurance (QC/QA) specifications in the State of Kansas. Successful completion of the course and certification (subject to a passing score on a test given at the end of the course) will be required for at least one person working for KDOT and one person working for the contractor on a Superpave project. These certifications are necessary for all KDOT Superpave projects.

Soils Field Tester (SOF)
Prerequisite:
Pass Basic Math Test

Course Objectives:
KDOT requires this course for persons who are testing soils to determine quality and acceptability.

Learning Objectives:
• Reduce a large field soil sample to a smaller one that is representative of the field sample and thus of total supply
• Prepare the sample for testing and learn the 12 classifications of soils
• Standard Compaction testing and moisture content
• Learn the calculations for all tests and reduce samples to test size
• Determine the density of soil in-place by using the Sand-Cone method
• Determine the moisture content of soil using calcium carbide gas pressure tester “Speedy Meter”
• Determine the liquid limit of soil using the multi-point method and the single point method
• Determine the plastic limit and the plasticity index
• Practice the description/identification of soils visually and/or manually

Course Objectives:
Statistics is a key component of the KDOT Quality Control/Quality Assurance program. The information discussed in this class can be found in the Construction Manual Part V. The statistical analysis presented in this class allows KDOT to validate that contractor test data comes from the same population as KDOT results. Also these formulas allow the contractor to determine
how variable their process is fluctuating. Each analysis has a tremendous impact on the project and amount of payment received by the contractor. KDOT statistics keep the volume of data manageable and objectively interpreted.

Superpave Field Renewal Exam (SF)
Course Objectives:
The Kansas Department of Transportation has established a Superpave Renewal Exam for individuals who must renew the Superpave Field certification.
There are three method/locations where these recertifications can be accomplished. They are as follows:
1. The first method is to take the exam at K-State – Manhattan which will be offered at the end of a regular Superpave class. This exam consists of a written and a performance exam and is usually given on a Thursday or Friday. Applicants who wish to accomplish the written and performance exam must enroll through Continuing Education at Manhattan (785-532-5569). The cost of this exam is $150. NOTE: There will be NO reduction in exam fee due to students who only take written exam.
2. The second method is to take the written exam only on selected dates and times at K-State at Salina. The exam is only a written exam and all prerequisites such as performance/witness testing must have been satisfied. Applicants who wish to accomplish the written exam must enroll through Continuing Education at Salina (785-826-2633.) The cost of this exam which includes a current manual is $85.00. See below for dates the exam will be given.
3. The third method is to take the written exam at locations other than Salina or Manhattan, such as at the KDOT District Office. At the present time this option is only available in KDOT District 3 and District 4. The exam is only a written exam and all prerequisites such as performance/witness testing must have been satisfied. Applicants who wish to accomplish the written exam must enroll through Continuing Education at Salina (785-826-2633). The cost of this exam is $85.00. See below for

Traffic Control Inspection (TCI)
Learning Objectives:
This is a one-day course that reviews the basics of proper traffic control inspection for all construction projects in the State of Kansas. This course is recommended to those individuals who anticipate being involved with traffic control or who are currently involved with traffic control and would like a basic refresher.
