Credibility
  • Is an author listed?  What are the author's credentials?  Does the author provide contact information?
  • Has the author taken care to check for misspelling, poor grammar, etc.?
Accuracy
  • Is the date of the site current?
  • Is the information complete and not too vague?
  • Does the author acknowledge all views?
Reasonableness
  • Is the author fair and objective?
  • Is the author concerned with the truth?
Support
  • Does the author provide support for the information?
  • Are the sources listed?
  • Are there other resources with similar information?

ChemExper
Contains 60,000+ compounds with their physical properties such as boiling point, melting point, IR spectrum (5000+), MSDS (12000+), supplier information, 2D and 3D structures. Useful Chemistry Sites:

ChemFinder
Search for information, including physical property data, on chemical compounds. Search by chemical name, CAS registry number, molecular weight, etc. Includes links to more information about chemical compounds.

ChemIDplus
ChemIDplus is a free, web-based search system that provides access to structure and nomenclature authority files used for the identification of chemical substances cited in National Library of Medicine (NLM) databases. The database contains over 368,000 chemical records, of which over 206,000 include chemical structures, and is searchable by Name, Synonym, CAS Registry Number, Molecular Formula, Classification Code, Locator Code, and Structure.

healthfinder® is an award-winning Federal Web site for consumers, developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services together with other Federal agencies.

Household Products Database
Information in the Household Products Database is taken from a variety of publicly available sources, including brand-specific labels and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) prepared by manufacturers.

NIST Chemistry WebBook
Searchable database providing easy access to chemical and physical property data for chemical species. Search types include: formula, name, CAS registry number, author, structure, ion energetics properties, vibrational and electronic energies, and molecular weight. Also includes a detailed User Guide.

PubMed
PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine, includes over 15 million citations for biomedical articles back to the 1950's. These citations are from MEDLINE and additional life science journals. PubMed includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources.

TOXLINE
Access to information in all areas of toxicology, including chemicals and pharmaceuticals, pesticides, environmental pollutants, and mutagens and teratogens.

ToxNet
Several databases sponsored by the National Library of Medicine including toxicology and hazardous substances data, the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI), and Toxline, a database of references to toxicological effects of chemicals.

Tox Town
An introduction to toxic chemicals and environmental health risks you might encounter in everyday life, in everyday places.

WebElements
WebElements is a hypertext-linked collection of property data on the first 112 elements including (where available): general, chemical, physical, nuclear, electronic, biological, geological, crystallographic, reduction potential, isotopic abundances, electronic configurations, ionization enthalpy data and additional textual information, especially on the history of the elements.

Search Tips

  • Begin by defining exactly what you are searching for.
  • Select the keywords in your topic.
  • Be specific when determining keywords and terms to search.
  • Use the advanced interface of electronic databases and Internet search engines to help narrow your search
  • Limit results in electronic databases to full-text or peer reviewed journals only
  • Use Boolean Operators to connect search terms (Click for a brief explanation of Boolean Operators)
  • Take notes during your research to keep track of where you have been, keywords searched, what worked and what didn't, etc.
