Frequently asked questions

When will I find out about my Fall room assignment?
In late July we will send new students official notification confirming their room assignment, mailing address, and roommate's name, email address, and phone number.

What if my roommate and I can't get along?
Although roommate assignments are considered permanent, should problems arise, room changes are allowed two weeks after the start of the semester. The waiting period allows the Office of Residence Life to verify occupancy. It also allows you time to evaluate your situation carefully and to consider more than first impressions. If your roommate conflict cannot be resolved, you should speak with your Resident Assistant.

How many people share a bathroom?
In Residence and Harbin Hall, two to four people share a bathroom.

What does my housing fee include?
The housing fee includes, a furnished room, cable TV service, Ethernet service, local telephone (voice mail, three-way calling, call waiting, and call transfer), heating and air-conditioning, all utilities, and meal service.

Are students responsible for cleaning their own rooms?
Students are responsible for cleaning their own rooms. Vacuum cleaners, mops, brooms, and cleaning supplies are available free of charge for students to use.

May I cook in my room?
You are welcome to use a microwave, compact refrigerator, coffee maker, or rice cooker in your room. Appliances with open heating elements or coil are not allowed in the residence halls, this includes hot plates, toasters, and toaster ovens. However, cooking should be done only in designated cooking spaces.

Can I have a microwave?
You may have a microwave in your room as long as it is no larger than 800 watts.

What about a refrigerator?
You may have a refrigerator in your room as long as it is no more than 5.0 cubic feet.

Should I bring my TV, and what about cable?
Many students bring a TV to their room. There is one cable outlet in each room. Expanded Basic cable service is provided in each room (about 60 Channels) by Cox Communications. The cost of the cable is included in the housing rates. You can purchase additional services by contacting Cox Communications at 825-7151.

How can I get my computer up and running?
Each room is supplied with two data jacks that give access to the campus network and the Internet. The jacks are standard RJ-45 (8 contact modular) interface for 10/100 Fast Ethernet connections. Each resident must supply a Category 5 data cable and a network interface card (NIC) installed and set up in their computer. Each NIC setup will vary depending on brands and models as well as operating systems and networking software. In general, each computer should be setup as a Microsoft network client with TCP/IP network protocol to access the KSU-Salina network and Internet. TCP/IP should be configured with DHCP to automatically obtain IP address and other settings. Before resident attaches their computer to the network they must complete and submit the form entitled "Application for Dorm Network Connection" to the Office of Information Systems. This form will be available in your housing packet when you arrive on campus.

What about printing?
There is a laser printer available in the computer lab in each residence hall. Students must supply their own paper. The printer may be networked from your room or from our state of the art computer labs.

What about phone service?
Each room comes with one phone and two phone jacks to be shared by both roommates. These phones include voice mail, three-way calling, call waiting, and call transfer. Personal telephones are also compatible with our system. The cost of the local phone is included in the housing rates. Direct dialed long distance services are available through K-State Telecommunications. To obtain access you will need to send in a postage-paid card that you will receive when you move in to receive your personal access number. Within a few days you will receive your personal authorization code and can begin making long distance calls. K-State Telecommunications will bill you monthly for the long distance calls that you make.

What furniture is in each room?
Each room has two beds, two dressers, two closets, electrical sockets, data connections, and phone connections. All furniture must be kept in the room, as there is no additional storage space available. In the interest of safety, you are required to use surge protectors instead of extension cords.
